  On July 18, 1950, a blond boy is born to an upper-middle-class family in Blackheath, just outside London, England. His name is Richard Branson, and he will go on to found the Virgin Group. Richard Branson was raised by a free-spirited and adventurous mother.

  However, Branson had a fatal flaw: when he entered school and opened his textbooks, he couldn’t read them properly. Branson was dyslexic.

  Unable to see the book, Branson excelled in sports rather than academics. He captained the school soccer team.

  At age 17, Branson dropped out of school and started a magazine called The Student in his attic. He planned, wrote, and edited the magazine all by himself. When his principal saw this unusual behavior, he said, “He’s either going to go to jail or he’s going to be a millionaire.” Branson ended up doing both.

  Branson’s sights are now set on space. He founded Virgin Galactic, an aerospace company, to pursue space travel. In November 2014, a Virgin Galactic private spacecraft exploded during an experimental flight.

  “If we can figure out what went wrong, and if we can overcome it, we’ll keep going with the dream,” Branson said. This epitomizes Branson’s philosophy of pioneering new ways of doing things rather than letting failure get in the way.
